Protecting Your Finances: Awareness of Recent Mail Thefts and the Importance of Digital Payments

As we approach the new year, it's important to stay vigilant about the security of your financial transactions. Several alarming incidents of mail theft and check washing have occurred in Western New York, including Hamburg and Cheektowaga. These crimes not only disrupt the postal service but also pose significant risks to your personal finances.
Recent Incidents
In Hamburg, a mail carrier was robbed at knifepoint, and the suspect stole an 'arrow key' used to access mailboxes and drop points. This key is now in the hands of criminals who can potentially access and tamper with your mail. Similarly, three individuals were charged with stealing mail using a stolen key in Cheektowaga, highlighting the ongoing threat to our community.

These thefts are part of a larger trend where criminals target mail to steal checks, which they then alter through a process known as check washing. This allows them to change the payee and amount, leading to significant financial losses for the victims.

  • How You Can Protect Yourself
Given the increasing sophistication of these crimes, we strongly encourage our members to consider using digital payment methods. Digital transactions are faster and more convenient and offer enhanced security features that protect against fraud and theft. Here are some steps you can take:
  • Use Online Banking and Bill Pay: Manage your finances and pay bills through our secure online banking platform.
Set Up Direct Deposit: Ensure your paycheck and other regular payments are deposited directly into your account, reducing the risk of mail theft.
  • Utilize Mobile Payment Apps: Apps like Zelle, PayPal, and Venmo offer secure ways to send and receive money without needing physical checks.
  • Monitor Your Accounts Regularly: Monitor your account activity and report suspicious transactions immediately.
